In an inspiring display of youthful generosity and community spirit, two fourth-grade girls in Port Washington, NY recently set up a lemonade stand in their neighborhood with a positive mission: to raise funds for North Shore Animal League America. Driven by their love for animals and the desire to make a difference, we were thrilled these young philanthropists chose to dedicate their efforts to our organization.
The 2024 Walk & Wag Fundraising Challenge rallied passionate animal lovers nationwide to step up, leash up, and raise critical funds to save the lives of homeless dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. Over the 30-day challenge, participants from 90 cities and 22 states walked in solidarity to support North Shore Animal League America’s no-kill mission.

At Animal League America, we are profoundly grateful for the partnership of donors like Abdul Isahack, who recently made a generous gift in memory of his late wife, Bharnie. Abdul and Bharnie’s support of our organization began in 1984 when they came to our Port Washington Adoption Center and found Lance. A clever shepherd mix, Lance was their loyal companion for 19years. Then in 2005, they adopted Kiwi, an affectionate Labrador rescue, and she was a beloved member of their household until her passing two years ago.
Adjusting to a shelter environment after losing the only home they’ve ever known has taken Pearl and Piper lots of resilience, but these precious felines still have an abundance of affection to share. This beautiful, senior mother-daughter cat duo has spent the past two years in our Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center, patiently waiting. They just need someone to give them a chance.
At North Shore Animal League America, we believe in caring for all animals in need, for however long or short a time that may be. Through the support of our Comfort Pet Hospice Care, a part of our Foster Care Program, we are able to provide animals with terminal illnesses the compassionate care they need to live their final days surrounded by love. For a loveable senior tabby named Cutie, the program has been a blessing.
For high school senior Grace, volunteering at North Shore Animal League America started as a school requirement, but quickly became something much more. “I always knew I wanted to volunteer at an animal shelter,” Grace told us. “When I had to complete service hours for class, I saw it as my chance. I had adopted a cat from Animal League America before and loved the organization. Once I started volunteering, I knew I wasn’t going to stop.”
In the world of animal welfare, there are always battles to be fought on behalf of innocent creatures. One of our shelter partners, Little Wanderers NYC, has been fighting a battle for years to put an end to a horrific culture of abuse right in their own community in the Bronx. With a heart full of love for animals and a desire to make a difference, Richard Cogan has been part of North Shore Animal League America’s mission since 2022. His journey into volunteering with the organization stems from a personal connection to both the cause and the furry companions he serves.
From an early age, Enya knew she wanted to follow in her mom’s footsteps and volunteer at North Shore Animal League America, but first she had to wait until she turned 16. Now she is enrolled in our VolunTEEN program and loving every minute of it.
