Disabled Rescue Pet Continues to Beat the Odds

Every rescue pet has a unique story to tell. But some stories stand out as some of our proudest success stories. Take Jamie, a Cocker Spaniel puppy rescued from a Midwestern commercial breeding facility with multiple disabilities, whose photo on one of our social media platforms placed him in the arms of his perfect human companion.

Abandoned and Struggling to Survive

Heartbreaking. There’s simply no other way to describe Forest’s condition when he first arrived at North Shore Animal League America. The 8-year-old Shih Tzu was found abandoned in a vacant parking lot struggling to survive. His black and white coat filthy and severely matted. His ears and skin badly infected. Both front legs mangled, the left also wounded due to the unkempt hair that wrapped itself so tightly around the limb it caused lack of blood flow. There’s no telling how long this poor creature was left to suffer in this condition, but he’ll never feel that pain again thanks to the high quality compassionate care he’ll receive at our Pet Health Centers.

Veterinary Team Comes to Aid of Ailing Kitten

Kittens, so innocent and full of life, should spend their formative years exploring and playing, basking in front of sun drenched windows, and enjoying the company of human companions. Unfortunately, not every animal who finds themselves at our Port Washington, N.Y. campus has the luxury of enjoying such spoils. Recently, we met Trey, a 5-month-old kitten, when he and his sibling were picked up by our Rescue Team and swiftly transported to our Pet Health Centers.

Rescue Transport from Turks & Caicos Provides Hope for Ailing Dog

As he was carefully loaded onto a stretcher and placed into one of Animal League America’s Mobile Rescue Units, you could see the pain in Clifford’s big brown eyes. Earlier this year, this young dog was rescued in Turks and Caicos by the local SPCA after suffering multiple traumatic injuries to one of his front legs and hips, presumably a result of being hit by a car or truck. When they realized how severe Clifford’s injuries were, they reached out to the world’s largest no-kill rescue and adoption organization for assistance.

Donor Spotlight: Robert Certilman

Robert Certilman has always had a soft spot in his heart for animals–particularly dogs because of their playfulness and loyalty. Although his hectic work schedule hasn’t allowed him to have a pet of his own for quite some time, he missed having a four-legged friend at home to greet him after a long day at the office.

Volunteer Appreciation Month: Debby Rightmyer

“I take a lot of pride in working with the dogs who need it the most. Since many of these animals are with us for significant periods of time, I have the opportunity to build strong relationships with some of them. This allows me to teach them important skills that will give them a better quality of life in the long run.” - Debby Rightmyer, Volunteer since 2005.
