A victim of animal cruelty, resilient Clarence is giving us all the gift of hope. It is heart-wrenching to consider the circumstances that brought this scrappy, young Terrier into our hands at Animal League America, but thanks to a collaborative rescue effort his future is changed forever.
Finally safe and sound, a striking array of dogs and puppies descended the steps of the Animal League America Mobile Rescue Unit on Sunday, November 14, 2021, into the welcoming arms of our volunteers. In all, 48 incredible animals – no longer unwanted – arrived to have their lives transformed.
Though Hurricane Ida has come and gone in most people’s memories, the residents of the Gulf Coast region are still struggling. Electricity remains scarce in some areas, and access to gas and basic household goods is limited. Supported by the generosity of our local community, North Shore Animal League America continues to show up for the people and animals of the region.
On Labor Day, 55 adorable canines exited our Mobile Rescue Unit into the bright sunshine, and into the helping hands of dozens of North Shore Animal League America volunteers and staff. These precious dogs and puppies now have a second chance at life with help from our shelter partner, Paws4Life. They were rescued from Louisiana-area shelters in advance of Hurricane Ida, in order to make room for animals displaced by the storm.
Our Emergency Rescue Team has been in contact with our shelter partner, Paws4Life in Shreveport, Louisiana, as they prepare for Hurricane Ida. The storm is coming in fast and is expected to make landfall this Sunday. We are currently preparing our team to make the journey to help them deal with the aftermath in any way we can. At this difficult time supplies will be hard to come by for those affected by this storm. You can help by donating much needed supplies that our Emergency Rescue Team will bring to the area to be distributed to Paws4Life and other affected shelters in surrounding areas.
This past weekend it was clear skies ahead for the 21 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens who landed at Republic Airport in Farmingdale, NY, on their way to Animal League America and a brighter future. Through a new collaboration with Amelia Air Animal Rescue, and the efforts of our South Carolina partner Lakeside Animal Rescue, Animal League America was able to save these precious animals, some of whom were pulled from overcrowded shelters. All these animals are now well on their way to finding responsible, loving homes as safely and quickly as possible.
Our shelter partner, Turks and Caicos Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (TCSPCA), reached out to us to help a hurt pup needing medical care beyond what they could handle. Our rescue team acted swiftly, and brave Niko was soon on his way to the safety of our Port Washington, NY campus.
After ten-year-old Phoenix was rescued from a puppy mill, he wasn’t ready for his journey to be over. Though his frail body gave out from cardiac arrest within minutes after arriving to our campus, miraculously this little Maltese sputtered back to life in our Pet Health Center, earning him the nickname Phoenix.
Recently, North Shore Animal League America took part in a rescue that saved more than 150 dogs from an extreme hoarding situation in Tennessee. Shelter partner Rescue DOG (Mountain City, TN) led the mission in lifting the dogs – primarily Chihuahuas of varying ages — out of unfathomable living conditions.
On Saturday, May 15, 48 dogs and two puppies rescued from commercial breeders in the Midwest arrived to our Port Washington, NY campus. As one-by-one, a variety of dogs — including many Poodles, Pomeranians, Dachshunds, Shih Tzus, and Yorkies — made their way into the gentle hands of our volunteers to be carried inside, you could see a common feature in all their faces. They were ready to accept a tender touch. Whether shy, or confidently seeking attention, it was clear each dog was grateful for the kindness and compassion we were there to give.
