Picture this; you’re a happy, healthy dog living with your beloved family. You enjoy going out for walks with your pet parents, lounging around the house with your canine siblings, and the sound of your food bowl being filled at dinner time makes your tail wag like the propeller on a Boeing 757 airliner.
In addition to our regular weekly life-saving rescues and transports, 39 dogs and puppies at risk of euthanasia were welcomed to North Shore Animal League America.
It’s that time of year again; kitten season. The time of year when unspayed cats give birth, flooding animal shelters and rescue groups across the nation with homeless litters with no place to call home. Millions of healthy, adoptable cats and dogs are euthanized each year in the United States because there simply are not enough homes for them all.

Five pickup trucks trudge through a muddy, rain-soaked field in the rural Midwest. Stacked haphazardly in the flat beds of these trucks sit a handful of wire crates covered by a giant tarp. Crammed inside these flimsy, rusted crates are terrified dogs fresh out of the nightmare that is living as a breeding machines in a cold, inhumane commercial breeding facility.
Imagine this: You're a dog. Okay, I know it’s not the easiest thing to fathom considering you don’t have four legs and most of us aren’t covered in fur. But, think about what it would be like to trek up and down the heavily forested mountains of Taiwan as a guide dog. Now, imagine the government closes the patrol station because of budget cuts, and you’re left stranded in severely harsh conditions with no food, no water and hardly any shelter.
Animal League America conducted emergency rescue and relief efforts for the animals and people affected by Hurricane Sandy. After opening our emergency animal shelter on Sunday, October 28 at Mitchel Field in Nassau County, NY, over 400 animals that were displaced when their owners had to evacuate their homes were taken in.
North Shore Animal League America and National Mill Dog Rescue teamed up to help Colorado residents and their pets that were evacuated from their homes due to the dangerous wildfires that ravaged more than 15,000 acres.
In the year following Hurricane Katrina, North Shore Animal League America made thirty six road trips and conducted two unprecedented airlifts, rescuing 1,327 dogs and cats from the impact areas. Many years after the devastating blow dealt by Hurricane Katrina, many of the residents of the Gulf Coast region continue the work of restoring their lives and rebuilding their homes. The Animal League holds steadfast to its promise to help the animals from that area.
