A Third Lifesaving Trip Returns from Hurricane-Devastated Southern States

On October 23, 2020, our Mobile Rescue Unit pulled into our Port Washington, N.Y. campus from its third lifesaving mission to the hurricane-devastated areas in Louisiana and Texas. It was carrying 37 puppies and dogs and 18 cats and kittens that would have been euthanized as the shelters there are overflowing with animals due to the non-stop storms.

This rescue was organized with Paws4Life, located in Shreveport, Louisiana, who’s been very active pulling dogs and cats from local shelters that were affected by both Hurricanes Laura and Delta. Most of the dogs were placed into foster care homes until the arrival of our Mobile Rescue Unit to transport them to New York. Some animals also came from the Bossier City Animal Control in Louisiana. Our Rescue Team rendezvoused with Paws4Life in Knoxville, Tennessee, to transfer the animals and hit the road again for the return trip.

Animals desperately needing homes traveled in from all over the region. TOTS Animal Rescue in Farmerville, Louisiana, brought Olivia and her puppies to meet our Mobile Rescue Unit after she was rescued from the streets. Some organizations like Big Sky Ranch/Catnip Foundation of Folsom, Louisiana, drove five hours to bring pups and dogs in their shelter from Hurricane Laura so they had the chance to go to New York and get adopted. Charlie Brown, a three month old Pittie mix, and Noel, a young Australian Cattle Dog mix, and Ava, a golden-colored Labrador Retriever mix, were among those loaded onto our Mobile Rescue Unit. Petsavers Inc. of Shreveport, Louisiana, brought Benji, a sweet, Terrier mix who they thought would travel well, thrive on the adventure, and quickly get a home in New York.

The Rescue Team had also loaded much-needed supplies to distribute including lots of dog and cat food, water, crates, and cleaning supplies — many items are still in short supply in Louisiana and surrounding states due to all of the storms this season.
“Paws4Life is an amazing rescue partner. The chance to get on this transport was the last hope for some of these animals,” said Karla Agostinello, Rescue Manager for North Shore Animal League America. “We are already working with Paws4life on our next rescue and many more animals will make their way to our Port Washington, New York campus. Once they’re ready for adoption, we will find each of them their new loving home.”
