Despite days of challenging weather, our Rescue Team persevered to reach the more than 50 dogs saved from commercial breeding facilities throughout the Midwest. Working in partnership with National Mill Dog Rescue, they transported dogs and puppies – including Shih Tzus, Chihuahuas, Spaniels, Yorkies, Poodles and Shepherd mixes – via our Mobile Rescue Unit to the safety of our Port Washington, NY campus. These precious canines, who were cruelly cast aside and at risk of being euthanized, are now getting a new beginning and the care they deserve.
Coming from commercial breeding facilities means that most of these dogs and puppies have never had even basic veterinary care or socialization. Some are still frightened of people, which is understandable given their history. “These animals are really getting their very first unconditional love,” noted Ted Moriates, Animal League America Rescue Team Leader. They need patience over the coming weeks and months, and our specialists are tireless in giving each animal the support they require. Each and every dog receives medical and dental examinations, critical grooming, behavior evaluations, as well as toys and treats.
These survivors are now on the path to finding their adoptive families and are slowly building trust. And as the dogs and puppies get ready for their new homes, Ted likes to remind visitors to Animal League America that “when you adopt a pet, you’re not just saving that life, but you’re making room so we can continue our humane relocation program and save the animals still out there who need our help.”
